RenEco and Nordsol Launch Groundbreaking Liquid Biomethane Plant
RenEco Ltd, in partnership with Nordsol, is proud to announce that its newly commissioned Liquid Biomethane (LBM) Plant at the Wymington site is now fully operational and producing high-quality LBM - a biogenic, sustainable alternative to conventional LNG. This clean fuel is already powering RenEco’s own HGV fleet, as well as those of its customers, through a dedicated dispensing station in Bristol.
Capable of producing over 3,500 tonnes of LBM annually, the plant generates enough fuel to drive an HGV for an astonishing 8.7 million miles each year - that’s the equivalent of circling the globe 350 times.
At the heart of this achievement is RenEco’s Anaerobic Digestion (AD) facility in Wymington, which converts residential and commercial food surplus into biogas - a mix of methane and carbon dioxide. This biogas is then upgraded, separating and purifying the methane for use in the LBM Plant. There, the methane is liquefied under high pressure and low temperatures, creating ready-to-use LBM for fuelling HGVs.
What makes this project truly unique is RenEco’s closed-loop, circular economy model: the same HGVs that collect food surplus from commercial partners are powered by the fuel produced from that very surplus. It's a powerful example of sustainable innovation in action - trucks fuelled by the food surplus they collect.
Because the fuel is derived entirely from food surplus, the HGVs powered by our LBM emit no fossil-based CO2. Instead, they release short-cycle CO2 - carbon that was recently captured by plants and will be reabsorbed into the food chain. This natural cycle ensures that emissions remain part of the planet’s existing carbon loop, rather than adding new carbon to the atmosphere.
By switching to this renewable fuel, we are preventing more than 11,500 tonnes of fossil-based CO2 from being emitted each year - an important and measurable step on our journey toward Net Zero.
