RenEco and Sainsbury’s Launch Circular Fuel System to Power HGV Fleet

In a major step towards decarbonising the retail supply chain, RenEco is proud to announce the launch of an innovative, fully circular fuelling system. From March this year, 30 HGVs at Sainsbury’s Emerald Park distribution centre in Bristol, representing half the site’s fleet, will run on renewable Liquid Biomethane (LBM) derived entirely from the retailer’s own food waste, dispensed from a dedicated Bristol based fuelling station.

This first-of-its-kind initiative transforms food waste that cannot be donated or repurposed into a clean, high-performance LBM using anaerobic digestion - a process RenEco has helped pioneer for commercial-scale use. The result is a closed-loop system that not only eliminates reliance on diesel but also ensures that all fuel is sourced directly from food waste within Sainsbury’s operations.

The environmental impact is significant: the switch is projected to save over 3,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions annually, the equivalent of the yearly electricity use of over 6,000 UK homes. This directly supports Sainsbury’s goal to achieve net-zero emissions across its operations by 2035, aligning with broader national and global sustainability commitments.

Unlike conventional biofuel solutions that rely on blending biomethane with fossil fuels, the RenEco system ensures traceable, 100% renewable fuel made solely from Sainsbury’s food waste. This level of transparency and sustainability sets a new industry benchmark for circular logistics solutions.

Working with Sainsbury’s, RenEco is demonstrating the power of strategic collaboration to unlock real, measurable carbon reductions. By transforming waste into a clean, renewable resource, RenEco is not only closing the loop but also paving the way for a more sustainable future in retail logistics.

This circular fuel innovation marks a major milestone in RenEco’s mission to deliver practical, low-carbon solutions to some of the UK’s most complex supply chain challenges.

“This announcement underscores the power that collaboration has in driving impactful change across business. We are proud to have worked closely with our supplier RenEco to deliver a pioneering move that supports our commitment to circularity and helps us to take a further step towards becoming net zero across our operations by 2035.” - Patrick Dunne, Sainsbury’s Chief Property and Procurement Officer
